Other information; From Sue Tabor: My grandfather was a Yorkshire man, a collier, who prior to the First World War had worked in Darfield Main colliery. He was badly wounded in 1916 and family history has it that he only survived because the sergeant lying next to him who had been destined to be stretchered off the battlefield in France had died, so George was picked up as a substitute! He suffered terrible injuries and it was some months before my grandmother was told of his survival. They had one daughter prior to the First World War. After his return, they had eight more children and he worked down the mines until his retirement many years later.
