At this time (prior to 1754) all that was required for a legal marriage was the consent of both parties and evidence of consummation, and of course a baby was evidence. So if John HARTGILL alias OWEN was born of these parents, he would have been considered by some as legitimate, but by others as illegitimate, since church marriage was certainly the norm and the preferred method of marraige.

About seven weeks before its birth she went to the parish of Bratton, where she was delivered of a female bastard child named Love. Stayed three weeks then came back to Gasper.
